Custom QR Codes: Prepare and Test Before Sharing

Prepare a QR code connected to your GreenQR Link page, review the documented customization panels, and check the image before sharing or printing.

This guide focuses on the QR image and scanning experience, with general design guidance and a practical testing checklist.

What Are You Customizing?

The QR Image

The QR image is the pattern people scan. Its appearance, size in your layout, and surrounding clear space affect how it can be read. Prepare and test the actual image you intend to share.

The Page It Opens

The connected GreenQR Link page contains the destinations visitors choose. For that visitor flow, read QR Code for Multiple Links. For organizing the page, use Smart QR Landing Pages.

The Documented QR Editor

The official user guide shows these interface elements and actions. Individual settings inside the collapsed panels are not described here.

1

Generate the QR Code

Generate a QR code connected to your GreenQR Link page. The documented interface shows a QR image and an option to save the code to your account.

2

Open the Editor

The documented editor displays a QR image beside panels named Style, Colors, Frame, Branding, and Options. Check the controls available in your account before choosing a design.

3

Prepare the Image

Print, Download, and Update actions are shown in the documented interface. Check the available download choices in the app; this guide does not assume a particular file format or hidden panel setting.

4

Check Before Sharing

Scan the resulting image with a phone and confirm that the correct page opens. A displayed QR image is not a substitute for testing the version you will actually use.

Design for Scanning

General QR design and printing guidance. These are educational practices, not built-in GreenQR Link testing tools or warnings.

Use Strong Contrast

Keep the QR code clearly distinct from its background. Avoid busy images behind the code or graphics that overlap its pattern.

Preserve the Quiet Zone

Standard QR guidance uses a clear margin four modules wide on every side. A module is one small square in the QR pattern. Keep text and graphics outside this quiet zone.

Avoid Distortion

Keep the code square when resizing. Do not stretch, squeeze, crop, or cover parts of the pattern or its clear margin.

Keep Modules Distinct

Avoid printing so small that the individual modules become hard to distinguish. There is no universal minimum physical size: check the final image at the distance and on the material where it will be used.

Test Before Printing

Use this checklist to test the image, the printed sample, and the destination before sharing widely.

Check Onscreen

Scan the image from another device. Confirm that it opens the intended GreenQR Link page and that the page loads.

Check After Resizing

Test the code again after placing it in your final layout. Check that its pattern and quiet zone remain intact.

Print a Sample

Test the final physical size on the actual paper, card, or other material before printing a large quantity.

Use Realistic Conditions

Try the lighting and viewing distance people will encounter. Check for glare, folds, curves, or damage that could obscure the code.

Try More Than One Phone

Use more than one phone to check the sample before mass printing. A successful test on one device does not guarantee every device will read it.

Follow the Destination

After scanning, open the links visitors need. Check that each destination loads and works on a phone.

Illustrative Example: A Business Card

A business owner places a QR code on a card with a short scanning instruction outside the quiet zone. Before ordering the cards, they print a sample at the intended size, try it with two phones, and check the page and its destinations. This is an illustrative testing workflow, not a customer result.

QR Image Changes and Destination Updates

Changing the content on the connected page is different from changing the QR image. Existing destination links can be updated while the printed code remains the same, provided it still opens the same available GreenQR Link page URL.

The printed pattern does not visually update when page content changes. Check the page URL and destination links after an update; do not assume a deleted, unavailable, or changed page URL will keep working.

Practical QR Code Questions

Answers for preparing the image and handling common print decisions.

What if the code scans onscreen but not on paper?

Compare the printed sample with the original image. Look for blurred modules, lost contrast, cropped margins, or distortion introduced by the layout or printer. Adjust the print layout and test another sample before continuing.

Can I put a caption beside the QR code?

Yes, as general layout guidance: place a short instruction such as “Scan to open our links” outside the quiet zone. Keep the caption and other graphics clear of the code.

Which download format should I choose?

Check the formats actually offered by the app and the requirements of your printer or design tool. Then test the exported image in the final layout. This guide does not promise a specific export format.

What if I want to change the appearance after printing?

A printed QR image cannot change visually. If you prepare a different-looking image, test that image and replace the printed material where you want the new appearance.
